Singapore's oldest primary rainforest
The forest was never extensively cleared for cultivation and shelters a vast variety of plants. Bukit Timah was declared by Alfred Russel Wallace to be 'exceedingly productive'. Indeed, species new to science continue to be discovered here, even today!
The Bukit Timah and Central Catchment nature reserves are home to more than 840 flowering plants and over 500 species of animals. These include towering trees, climbing palms (better known as rattans), ferns, orchids, gingers and strange blooms such as the Black or Bat lily. The forest is home to all kinds of animals. The most commonly encountered are the Long-tailed Macaques or monkeys. Please don't feed them as this does them more harm than good. Other special treats are the Flying lemur (Colugo) and squirrels. Forest birds include the Striped tit-babbler, the Fairy bluebird, drongos and bulbuls.
Pasir Ris Park Mangrove Boardwalk
At 71ha, this coastal park is one of Singapore's largest parks. Developed along the coast on reclaimed land, the park includes a 6ha mangrove swamp that was spared from re amation.The Mangrove Boardwalks have recently been upgraded. They bring you right through the dense mangrove forest for a closer look at the plants and animals of the back mangroves. These include mud crabs, mudskippers and mangrove trees such as Rhizophora and Bruguiera. Birdwatchers will be able to see birds perching on tree branches from the 3-storey high Bird Watching Tower.
The walk is well marked and there are lots of informative signs along the route. A night visit of the boardwalks is particularly interesting. You might be rewarded with rare sights of fireflies (here and there) and shy watersnakes in the mud.
The Park also includes a large manicured portion with playgrounds -- a giant space-net, cableways, innovative play stations and a maze garden, guaranteed to provide hours of fun and laughter. There are also cycling and jogging tracks, exercise stations.
The beach-front restaurants also provide a well-deserved meal after a walk through the mangroves.
The shores of Pasir Ris are also alive with interesting marine life.
